Demodex in Dogs
There are two types of mange commonly found in dogs.
I hear lots of questions about dog mange and hope to answer those questions here. First, because your dog has bad looking skin, some baldness, scratching and stuff like that doesn’t mean they have mange. Mange is a bug, called a mite, that lives in the skin. There are 2 kinds of mange that we are involved with : one of them is called demodectic mange or the demodex, which is mange that’s customarily found in young dogs. The explanation being is that younger dogs don’t have immunological systems as strong as older dogs that may fight this off and so these dogs somewhere around 3, perhaps 4 months of age will start to get tiny hairless patches of skin and ultimately we are going to find a mite there that has to be dealt with. The other kind of mange is known as sarcoptic mange-it is a lot more serious. Read the rest of this entry »
How to Groom an English Springer Spaniel
Trimming and grooming English Springer Spaniels is not hard to do and you can do it easily at home. There are some simple trimming tips which are easy to follow and only take 15-20 minutes a month at most. Generally, springers are easy to trim and keep tidy, unlike some other breeds. If you are to do the best job, then you will require some basic dog grooming tools: A straight scissors, a thinning scissors and a wide tooth comb – these are easily obtained from your local pet store.
A brief word here on hygiene – disinfect the scissors before and after use.
Some springer owners like to use clippers, though they are not really necessary on this versatile breed. Don’t give your dog too short a haircut as they are a working breed and the coat is to keep them warm. Read the rest of this entry »
What is a Springer Spaniel Field Trial?
Springer Spaniel field trialling is outdoors competition for working springers, English or Welsh.
The purpose of these competitions is to test the working abilities of the dog, for which, after all, he was bred. Provided the pedigree is good, then conformation is less of an issue and it is performance that counts.
Show dogs can be tested in their working abilities and achieve a Show Dog Working Certificate. Note the words ‘Show Dog’. This is a much less demanding test of a dog’s working abilities than is a full Field Trial. Read the rest of this entry »

The study is geared to children between the ages three and six. “This is not a small problem,” said David Schwebel, professor and vice chairman of the psychology department at UAB.
