This may be because some cats develop a strong immune response to the parasites, causing their bodies to kill the heartworms and end the infection. However, heartworm disease in cats is still potentially fatal and requires treatment.

Cats do not catch heartworms from other cats; infection occurs when a mosquito carrying heartworm larvae bites into a cat. The heartworm larvae transmitted during the blood meal travel through the cat's body, where they eventually settle in the blood vessels of the lungs. Once the heartworms mature, males and females mate and produce offspring, called microfilariae, which are released into the cat's bloodstream. From that point on, any mosquito that bites the same cat can potentially transmit your heartworms to other cats.

Symptoms of Feline Heartworms:

Symptoms vary and are sometimes mistaken for signs of other diseases, such as asthma. Some cats with heartworms may vomit intermittently, cough, have trouble breathing, gag, or experience lethargy, weight loss, anorexia, and rapid breathing. Other cats may exhibit no obvious symptoms.

Diagnosis is more difficult in cats than in dogs and usually involves X-rays, blood tests, microfilariae testing, and other exams. Because cats primarily exhibit symptoms associated with an immune response to the infection, and not heart-related symptoms like dogs, many veterinarians misdiagnose cats who present with mild symptoms.

Prevention and Treatment of Heartworms in Cats:

Outdoor cats are at greatest risk of heartworm infection due to their exposure to mosquitoes. Keeping your cat indoors and protected with preventative medication for cats is the best protection against infection. The American Heartworm Society recommends all cats begin treatment with a monthly preventative heartworm medication as soon as testing for heartworm antigens and antibodies is complete.

Once infection occurs, treatment options are limited. This is because there are currently no heartworm medications approved by the FDA for use in cats. Treatment is aimed at minimizing symptoms and preventing complications and may involve oxygen therapy, cage confinement, cardiovascular drugs, bronchodilators, IV fluids, antibiotics, prednisone, and frequent monitoring.

Sometimes they were kittens that came without a name, and sometimes older cats that came named. I've learned one thing about cats; you can't really pick a name for them without meeting them. It just does not work! Trying to force something that does not work is sure to cause frustration for you, and a cat that ignores their name. Now this may work with a dog, hamster, guinea pig, and who knows what else, but cats do have significantly more personality than those other creatures do!

Making lists, either mentally or on paper, or names you like is a fine idea. If you get your kitten you were going to called "Rupert" but that kitten doesn't seem like a "Rupert," well you better start over again. We found our cat named "Abby" was actually called "Puss" for example. If you knew her, "puss" was a much better name than "Abby." Making a list of possible names, names you like at least for cats, is fine. Do not get too attached to nay name as it just may not be appropriate and may not fit. If you have many possible choices that you like, you no doubt will have one that is suitable once you meet each other. I suggest a list of at least ten to twenty names if you go this route, and be prepared to abandon your list if a better name pops in to your mind!

You may also find a prenamed cat gets called something else once you adopt them, and their original name fades into obscurity. I knew an adult cat supposed named "mittens" who was almost immediately called "Bob." There was nothing "mittens" like about this cat. You just never know until you meet them! Flexibility is the rule and is required.

If you a getting a kitten or adult cat, feel free to think about names. But don't choose one name until you meet them as you may find the name is entirely inappropriate! You may have chosen "Fluffy" but "Rover" may be a more appropriate name!

One last thing: if the name you chose or that already came attached to your new feline friend is inappropriate, just change it! It's not like you need to hire a lawyer and go to court! You can just decide to change it and go from there!

I have many interests besides cats and you can read about some of them at White Christmas Trees or http://whitechristmastrees.org

To raise a healthy and wealthy pet, whether it's a dog, cat, hamster, guinea pig, or exotic animal like turtle, iguana, or snake, you have to put your time, attention and care to the pet you chose to raise. This means that you really have to spend your money on purchasing things your animal needs. Like in the case of cat, if you want to teach your cat proper sanitation, you have to purchase your pet cat litter furniture.

Owning, raising and breeding any types of animal is a serious task, it can be very difficult especially if you have lots of it in your keeping. Having three or four dogs in your house can be a bit annoying; as you have to endure their noisy barks every time see strangers. This is a natural animal instinct; you can't take this away from them, except when you enroll your dog in a attitude control training.

Cats on the other hand don't bark at anyone. They are just quite as they observe their environment. But one thing that makes this pet so lovable, which makes more and more people want to own them is their sensitive and caring behavior.

This pet loves to stick in one corner of your house, lie there for hours and even sleep all day. But once you put them on your lap, you can't help but notice their caring attitude towards their person.

Like dogs, cats also have some attitude that you may want to correct. It is natural for them to defecate anywhere, usually to places where they are comfortable doing it, like your house, thus, leaving your house stinky and dirty.

If you don't want to go on like this, you must purchase your pet a good litter box. This litter furniture can contain your pet's poop and keep the foul smell of their manure inside it, keeping your house clean and healthy.

I've also had dogs, rabbits, hamsters and a twenty-five gallon fish tank. At the moment, we are down to one cat and that inherited-from-the-kids already mentioned, complete with a ten inch long algae eater and one lone tetra. The tank is another story entirely...now for the cat.

Sapphire Samurai is Balinese, the long haired relative of the Siamese. He is mostly blond, which explains why his favorite place to sleep is the brand new, chocolate brown sofa. I may never get all the cat fur out of it. He has gorgeous blue eyes, hence the name and he knows he is the king of the castle.

One of the things he likes to do most is go outside. Unfortunately, he is half blind, geriatric and hasn't a particle of common sense. We live on a very busy street, so he cannot go out on his own. This brings me to one new law proposed in a city in New England. They want to make it mandatory the felines be on a leash when outside.

Can you walk a cat?

Yes, but it won't be anything like your experience walking a dog. I get snickers from the neighbors when they see me walking along behind the cat, in whatever direction he wants to go. To be honest, it's a lot more like the cat is walking me, as I have little option about the direction. At best, I can keep him from going further in a direction I don't want to go.

Most of the time, when he's out, he's on a twenty foot dog lead anchored to the lamp standing in the front flower garden. He can't get into much trouble in that range, but he tries. His favorite occupation whilst on this lead is to roll on the pavement. The bet place to roll is always where there is the most stuff that can get lodged in his long, fluffy fur. His second favorite thing to do is stalk squirrels.

I'm not talking about skinny, timid critters here. We have an avocado tree which is home to a family of them. They like this tree because they can eat avocados all day long. It gets frustrating for us mere humans, because their idea of eating the fat filled fruits is to take one bite out of this one, and the next bite out of that one, etc.

When one is cornered in the tree, one of two things will happen. If the squirrel thinks there's any possibility of the cat reaching him, he becomes one with the branch. "Nothing up here but us avocados..." If he's out of harms way he will start loudly cheebling his anger at the cat. Both can be amusing. Thankfully for both cat and squirrel we intervene before anything untoward happens.

The second proposed law is getting a cat license. There are good points to this idea, even though it is probably only being done to increase city revenue. If the cat has a license on its collar and does happen to get loose, the animal shelter knows who to call. The proposed fee is half that of dogs, and one that ought to be considered by all parties.

Owning a pet of any sort demands something of the owner. It's not about dominance over the animal, but dominion. They offer use companionship, free mouse hunting and other benefits. It's our obligation to make sure they are healthy, well fed and well looked after.

We worry about their health and well being, however with so many companies and product types available it may make it difficult to select the right product that will best meet the needs of our pets. This same problem exists for many cat owners as they try to choose which litter box to select for their kitten or cat.

A litter box is an important item for cats. An incorrect litter box may make it harder for cats to utilize and may make it much harder to litter box train kittens. Therefore, there are several essential factors that cat owners should think about when shopping for a new litter box.

The initial consideration for a new litter box should be ones lifestyle. There are numerous self cleaning litter boxes out there that advertise their abilities to minimize the cleaning needed by pet owners. Having said that, self cleaning litter boxes which use a rake process may truly be more difficult to thoroughly clean. Self cleaning litter boxes work well for most cats, but the rake may become packed if it must scoop loose stool. Because many older cats experience this problem, owners of older cats may be best to use a common hooded litter box.

Covered litter boxes are traditionally inexpensive and are produced in many different sizes. Because these litter boxes have a cover, litter tracking is reduced. Any time cats shake the litter off from their paws, the cover will contain the majority of the litter except for the opening in the cover. These styles of litter boxes can use any sort of cat litter, however they should be cleaned on a daily basis.

A standard litter box, which many call a litter pan, is usually very economical to buy. While the cost might be attractive to many pet owners, litter tracking is a major issue with this kind of litter box. Coupled with constant cleaning, these types of litter boxes really are a high maintenance item which many pet owners become disappointed with in a brief period of time.

One of the most critical points to keep in mind when choosing a litter box is to size it for the cat. If a cat has to leap in and out of the litter box, odds are it's simply too big for him. Especially with regards to litter box training, pet owners should do their best to make it easy for them to get into and get out of a clean litter box.

By thinking about lifestyle requirements, and the size of a kitten or cat, any cat owner can take the first steps toward supplying a healthy atmosphere for their cat to relieve themselves in. Furthermore, pet owners may rest knowing that there will be fewer accidents to clean in the years ahead.

As an animal shelter assistant, this writer has helped take care of many kittens and cats. She also manages a reputable cat litter box site which offers litter boxes as well as other pet products to cat owners.

What most people do not know is that there are some foods that humans can eat without any ill effects, but when fed to a dog can make them very ill.

Dogs should never eat onion in any form; onions are pure poison to a dog whether they are raw, cooked or dried. When you consider that most processed foods contain onions in some form or another you can see how easy it is to end up feeding your dog onions by accident. Onions cause the red blood cells in a dog to burst, when the bone marrow cannot keep up with the loss of red blood cells Heinz body anaemia sets it. By the time, you notice that your pet is ill there is a good chance that some serious damage will have already been done and that the anaemia will be irreversible. You should also not feed your dog anything containing garlic, for the same reason.

You should not feed dogs with grapes or raisins; in most dogs, they cause lethargy, diarrhoea and sickness. Calcium levels become elevated in a dog that eats raisins or grapes, which can cause kidney problems and in severe cases lead to full renal failure and death. Small dogs tend to be more sensitive than large dogs, but it is unwise to give any dog raisins or grapes.

Dogs love chocolate, but it is very bad for them because it contains theobromine which over stimulates the dog's nervous system. Feeding a dog human chocolate can lead to sickness, hyperactive activity, heart palpitations, muscle ticks and in extreme cases death. If your dog displays any of these symptoms, take them to the vet straight away.

Most dogs do not like nuts, but a few will wolf them down. Macadamia nuts should never be eaten by dogs, they cause muscle spasms that can put a strain on the heart.

I am sure you have thought about whether to have a pet insurance for your pet or not. will it be worth it in the end and will the insurance company even pay when an accident happen to your pet or will you be left with the bill and have nowhere to file a complaint?

Now you can never really avoid a situation like this but there are some specific things that you look into before you go into a deal with them and if you get the answers you're looking for then you are more likely to stand a fair chance when bad luck strikes and your pet needs treatment and medication.

In the paragraphs below I am going to tell you some simple but effective strategies that can help you find a pet insurance company that will be more likely to pay when your pet is in an accident and needs treatment. These are just the simple things and if you want more high level information, be sure to go check out my website.

The first thing to consider is whether you already know something about the pet insurance company's reputation. If you already know that they are not likely to be paying for any treatment without you having to pick a fight stay clear of them. It is not worth the effort.

After that you should seek to talk to some professionals. Vets will know a lot more about pet insurance companies than you might think. Every time a pet gets injured they will be involved in one way or another and they are therefore more likely to know who pays and who don't.

Now go check out online pet insurance reviews. There are a lot of great sites that will tell you what former customers think of the service that they got from the insurance companies. But be sure to read what is said between the lines as the most active reviewers will be people that didn't get what they wanted.

Finally I suggest that you call up the company that you are planning on purchasing pet insurance with. It will be of great value to talk to their customer support personnel to see whether they are treating you in a kind manor. You can even call them up and fake an accident to see how they react.

4 basic steps that will have a profound effect on what pet insurance company to sign up with. Now there are no guarantees that they are going to pay in case an accident do happen to your pet but as least you have given it a fair try. For additional information about pet insurance companies be sure to visit my website.

Mr. John Sommer, PhD. runs a very successful pet insurance website that focuses on helping pet owners get the most benefits from their pet insurance. Mr. Sommer has written several reviews of one of the largest pet insurance companies called VPI pet insurance and you will benefit from reading those reviews.

Even if you don't, most felines seem to be magnetically drawn to the litter box with very little urging from you.

There are however some instances when a kitten won't take to their cat litter box and instead may find a houseplant, or worse yet your carpet. Not catching problem behavior quickly might mean your cat will develop a habit of going wherever they please.

Creating a private environment

This is an important first step when toilet training cats: Many of us need privacy to do our business, yet don't give our animals the same respect. Most dogs are quite happy urinating, or having a bowel movement with the whole town staring at them.

Cats are a little different in most cases and plenty of cat owners out there will tell you how their cat will make a quick exit from their litter box when someone enters the room. Put the litter box in a room where your kitten will have some privacy to sniff around their box and get comfortable (litter boxes with a top enclosure are also ideal).

Lock the door

This doesn't mean permanently locking your kitten in a room and throwing away the key. Rather, if you can put your kitten alone in a small room with their litter box they will have much less opportunity to explore other areas to do their business. This is only necessary when your toilet training cats; after they're used to it and use the box frequently, you can move the box wherever you wish. Usually one or two day in a room with their box is all they need to become comfortable with their litter box.

If the cat isnt able to get a hairball out, it could result in a blockage of the intestines. Blockages are very serious, and can quickly become life threatening for your pet.

Cats that have long hair need to be brushed and combed on a daily basis, while cats with short hair need to be groomed on a weekly basis. When you brush your cat, you should always watch for lumps in the coat and skin irritations. You should start brushing along the cats back, going from his head to his tail. Do this a few times on one side, and then switch to the other. Each area should be brushed a few times in the direction of the way your cats hair is growing.

When you brush your cat, you should always avoid brushing his face and paws. If a cat doesnt like to be brushed, you can still groom him using another tool. The grooming glove is an excellent alternative to the brush, as most cats dont mind it at all. Starting out young is the key to grooming, as it will get your cat used to brushing and grooming. Some cats that have started grooming when they were kittens grow to love it, many of which often look forward to their grooming time.

When brushing your cat, make sure that you check his ears, eyes, teeth, and claws. His eyes should be bright and clear with nothing residing in the corners. His ears should be clean, pink in color, and no sign of ear mites. Ear mites result from dirt built up in a cats ears, and can result in the ears shriveling up and your cat losing his hearing. Ear mites are very annoying for the cat, and hard for you as an owner to get rid of. The best way to get rid of them is to ensure that your cats ears stay clean and healthy.

Each time you groom your cat, you should always aim to go a bit further with your examinations. When your cat remains still, you should always praise him and give him a treat. If your cat doesnt cooperate and starts to struggle, you shouldnt fight with him, but instead let him go and try the next day. Once your cat gets used to grooming he will look forward to it each and every day.
