A number of neglected and deserted animals end up in shelters that house them until someone is looking to adopt a pet or the shelter can no longer care for them. Adopting a pet of any kind from a shelter or animal rescue service is a great way to get a pet with medical treatment as well as the spaying or neutering of the animal. When you adopt a pet from a shelter or rescue that provides these kinds of services, you often save money on the care that the pet received while in the shelter or rescue's care than you would have if you had taken the animal to the vet on your own.

When you adopt a pet from an animal shelter or rescue, you aren't limited to just cats and dogs. Not everyone looking to adopt a pet has the room or desire to commit to caring for and raising a cat or a dog. A number of smaller pets that require minimal care and are just as rewarding as other animals for the right person are often available for adoption at animal shelters or rescues. If a person is interested in adding an animal to his or her family, they might want to adopt a pet that is often considered to be a traditional pet.

Along with domestic dogs and cats, many animal shelters have guinea pigs, bunny rabbits, gerbils, rats, hamsters and a number of other rodents that can offer a pet owner the kind of love and caring that they are looking for when they adopt a pet. Other options for someone who would like to adopt a pet can include a variety of birds and even ferrets.

When looking to adopt a pet, a benefit from adopting from a shelter would be that the animals have been socialized and a personality is often observed by the staff in order to help in the proper placement of each pet. Some shelters even microchip ID their animals so that if someone were to adopt a pet and the pet should end up back in a shelter, the animal can be identified.

Our family pets enjoy being with us, and RVing enables your family to be complete - without the anxiety associated with boarding your pets or asking a friend or neighbor to take care of animals while you're away.

Not all pets enjoy trips in a vehicle, but if you've taken your dog in the car to the dog park, to the vet, or on errands you already know what kind of a traveler you're dealing with. Cats are very different, as you probably know, and most are not happy travelers unless they've been trained to travel as young kittens.

When you bring your pet along with you, remember that it's never a good idea to leave your companion alone in a hot and unventilated RV for hours on end. You'll also not want to leave your pet with access to the entire RV. Just include an area that is spacious enough for your pet to enjoy with you, but away from the RV's driver. Nothing could be more catastrophic than having your affectionate critter finding his or her way under the accelerator or the brake while driving.

If your pet gets car sick, he or she is probably not the best candidate for an RV vacation and might actually be more comfortable staying at home. Many caged animals - guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, rabbits - are fairly easy to bring along because you can secure them and keep them happy with their toys. The exception to this is birds, as they can catch a draft fairly easily, so check with your bird veterinarian before you venture out with your feathered friend.

Before you make your final decision on bringing your pets, ask yourself a few questions: Will my pet remain safe during the trip? Will my pet be subjected to drafts, low or high temperatures. Is my pet in good health? Is my pet well-behaved? Will my pet enjoy being around other people and pets we might encounter during our travels? Is my pet a good traveler in general?

If you are pleased with your answers to those questions, then your pet will probably be a very good RV travel companion. Call your vet, grab your RV, and hit the road with your entire family!

Cigarette smoke is another serious inhaled trigger. Passive smoking (breathing in other people's smoke) is particularly harmful to asthmatic children because it gives their respiratory systems an extra burden to cope with. The mould and spores that thrive in damp conditions can also trigger an attack in susceptible individuals.

What about food allergies? If your child has an allergy to a particular food and is asthmatic, part of her allergic reaction may involve asthmatic symptoms. An allergic reaction can be quite dramatic with, for example, a red blotchy rash, vomiting and puffy face. It always happens immediately so you will almost certainly be able to pinpoint the cause.

Food allergies are associated will all atopic conditions already mentioned, although they are a much less common trigger than inhaled irritants. It is best to be guided by your instincts and to seek medical help if you feel it is necessary.

If your child has a viral infection, such as a cold or bronchitis, you may find that a bout of asthma follows close on its heels. This is because the airways, which are already affected by her asthma, are now under attack from the infection as well. Colds in very young children quite often lead to an asthma attack, sometimes through a build up of mucus in the airways.

Just as many physical factors can trigger an asthma attack, so can extremes of feeling, such as stress, overexcitement and sadness. It is now recognized that even young children react to stressful situations, such as parental splits an exam pressures at school, in the same way that adults do. Real stress makes physical demands on the body, blood pressure rises, muscles tense and the breathing rate speeds up.

In the same way, feelings of excitement or fear, or even a long bout of hysterical laughter, all of which make an increased demand on the child's lungs, can make an asthma attack more likely.

That all depends on what kind of pet you plan to get. Caring for a solitary goldfish doesn't take much time. But dogs are a different matter. They are social creatures. You need to walk dogs and spend time with them. Be realistic. How much time will you be able to give your pet? Is your family on the go-go-go from morning to dinner? Is your day mostly occupied with working outside the home, then picking up the kids from school and taking them to activities, then cooking dinner? Are your kids so busy they wouldn't have much time to throw a ball to Fido? These are thing you need to think about. For any animal you would consider as a pet check out books on the care and maintenance of them. After you've read the books write the pros and cons of having the pet on a piece of paper.

Sample pros and cons:

Hamster:

Pros- Lives in a cage. So don't need to be home to walk it or take it out to go to the bathroom. It's small and doesn't take up much space. Condo rules allow hamsters.

Cons- Hamsters can be stinky if the cage isn't cleaned. They can bite.

Puppy:

Pros- Kids really want one. Can be watch dog one day.

Cons- We live in a condo so we might not be able to have one in the complex. Also, if the puppy habitually barks it could upset the neighbors. We don't have a backyard. Puppies are a handful. I'm out of the house eight hours a day so I don't have much time to be with the puppy.

Puppies need to be potty trained and many chew for the first year. They need to be supervised. If you don't have the time to be with a puppy to properly train him would you be a good owner? Would the puppy be unhappy? If he would be, consider the hamster. If not, think about getting a guinea pig or a cat. Guinea pigs and cats are less dependent on their owners for socialization. However, if you have an indoor cat they tend to claw furniture so you'll need to get a scratching post. Also, who will clean out the litter box? And does anyone in your family have dander allergies? You might need to consider a hypoallergenic cat.

What if you're a stay-at-home mom with the space for a dog, but you're still unsure if a dog is right for you? Don't feel bad. A dog is a big commitment for many years. Maybe right now in your life you are busy with a baby. Perhaps you're worried about the dog slobbering on the baby and the furniture. And leaving its dog hairs everywhere in the house. Or maybe you're worried about vet bills. Or where the dog will go when you go back East for four weeks in the summer. There's nothing wrong about thinking about these things. You're being responsible and thinking ahead. Having a pet is not all sunshine and roses. You shouldn't just adopt a dog on an impulsive whim. If you're on the fence about getting a dog consider fostering one to see what it's like. Find a breed that will fit your household. Labradors and Golden Retrievers are great family pets but they are energetic. They need room and WALKS. If your family doesn't live an active lifestyle, foster another breed of dog. I seriously suggest you get a book on different dog breeds and read about the care and maintenance of any ones you would consider. The great thing about fostering a dog is, if it doesn't work out, you're not stuck with finding a new home for "Blackie" or having to send him to an animal shelter where he could be put down.

Before you get a dog, or foster one, have a family meeting where you discuss the ground rules for "Blackie." Divvy up the chores. Who will walk him? Who will feed and bathe him? Where will he sleep? Will he be an indoor or outdoor dog or mainly an outdoor one with kitchen privileges? If he sheds and your son/daughter doesn't sweep up his hairs in the afternoon what is the consequence for this? There is a lot to be taken into account before bringing a dog home to live with your family.

In the end you might decide a guinea pig is the way to go for the time being. After a few months when you feel your children are doing a proper job of cleaning its cage, feeding it and all around caring for "Herby" then you can consider a dog in a year or two. If you have the time and patience.

However, caring properly for an animal involves a considerable and long term commitment. With the scientific improvements in nutrition and veterinary medicine, many dogs and cats live into old age; over 12 years is not uncommon (on average dogs live for up to 15 years and cats up to 18 years). Unfortunately, thousands of animals are destroyed every year as they are given up when their owners can no longer care for them. If you really care about animals, it is worth giving consideration to the common reasons for animals being given up - here are a few other points worth considering before adopting or buying a pet.

Think about how you see your life developing. Do you plan to have children, do you have travel plans, do you intend to move house or emigrate? Any big life change will impact on your pet and may mean you have to give him/her up.

Involve all members of your household in this decision and think carefully about why you want a pet; getting one to keep your children entertained, will end up being a mistake. If you are a student or travel frequently, it is best to wait until your life is more settled before getting taking on an animal.

Pets take time, every day - even if you are working, busy or tired. They require more than food and water and are solely reliant on you for companionship, exercise, stimulation and care throughout their lives. Whilst all pets require time and a regular routine, some types of animals need more than others. All pets are entirely reliant on you to meet all their needs - you can't send them to their room to play a computer game!

If you work full time, it is advisable not to get a dog. Dogs unlike cats experience boredom and loneliness without human companionship. They require a lot of attention and several walks and play time every day and most dogs require regular grooming especially if they are long haired..

If you are not sure if you could provide properly for a dog, a useful exercise is to write down what you would see them doing each hour of each day - i.e. put hours 1 - 24 down on paper and write an activity next to each hour. You will quickly see that even if you are able to provide three hours of walking per day and say 10 hours are for sleeping, this still leaves 11 hours when your dog will be inactive and reliant on you for a game or some activity.

Don't get a dog if you are going to let him vegetate; they are working animals and soon become very frustrated if they are not getting a regular change of scenery, daily exercise and games where they interact with you. In fact, most behavioural and many health problems are triggered when a dog is not getting the exercise and stimulation that he needs and in many cases the solution to a behavioural problem is to regularly tire the dog out with mental and physical exercise.

Cats are more independent than dogs, however most do need company and it is advisable to get two cats if you are out at work all day. Long haired cats require regular grooming.

Rabbits require company, stimulation, grooming and regular cleaning of their accommodation area. Smaller animals such as hamsters, guinea pigs, exotics, etc require specialised care and contrary to popular belief, they are not an easy option; even though they are smaller than a dog, they still require a lot of care and attention.

Pets cost money - according to the RSPCA, it costs approximately £700 per year in the UK to keep an average sized dog. Your pet will require a healthy diet, bedding, toys, vaccinations flea & worm treatments, micro-chipping, neutering, and veterinary checks.

Trips to the vet can be expensive and it is advisable to purchase pet insurance. Other costs can include; training classes and grooming and if you are unlucky, you may have to pay out for ruined carpets or furniture, flea infestations and unexpected medical emergencies. Consider who would look after the animal if you cannot take him on holiday with you and remember that any type of boarding will cost you money.

Check that no-one in your house is allergic to animals:- it is one of the biggest reasons that animals have to be given up. The other top reason is not having enough time.

Establish whether you are allowed to have a pet where you live. If you are renting your accommodation, you may find that you are not allowed to have a pet on the property and it is important to know this before you get an animal.

If you are pregnant or intend to have children in the near future, it is advisable to wait until your children are older before getting an animal. Many pets are given up when their owners have children as it is very difficult to maintain the commitment of caring for an animal and at the same time look after a young baby.

Animal rescue centres are excellent places to get an animal from. Most provide helpful after care such as low cost veterinary facilities, behavioural & training classes and grooming. Rescue centres will ensure that the animal is neutered, micro chipped and vaccinated and this is often included in the adoption fee. The adoption fee from an animal rescue centre is normally a fraction of the cost of buying an animal from a pet shop or breeder even though animal rescue centres are usually set up as registered charities and are entirely reliant on donations to keep their services running.

Like children, pets require love and attention throughout the day as well as at night time. From this fundamental belief was founded the belief of pet day care. At day care your pet will be fed, groomed, trained and played with any time you are not available to do so.

Pet day care can be divided into two categories: boarding services and actual day care. Boarding services can be found for animals from hamsters to horses, and are particularly helpful if a proprietor is attending be away overnight or for an prolonged period of time and has no one to care for their pet in their apartment, or if an owner has insufficient space for the care of a large animal (this is very general in the holdall of horses). The pet will be given their own individual sleeping space, feeding dishes and toys, and will be tended to daily as if they were home. Time is allotted for daily grooming, training, physical exercise and play.

Day care is available for pets whose owners like to drop them off in the morning and pick them up in the evening after working hours. Again, bedding, toys and feeding bowls are regularly provided. While facilities of this type can be found for the majority small animals, dogs are the primary focus, and more facilities for them can be found than for others. At doggy day care, dogs are loved by a staff of trained professionals, knowledgeable about dog behavior, safety and health management. They're groomed and provided training by a knowledgeable trainer according to their level of knowledge.

In most facilities dogs are separated into groups according to both age and size. As the equipment for small dogs is inadequate for large ones, while large equipment may overwhelm a tiny dog, this is extremely important for a pet's well being. The division is normally made at twenty five pounds. Puppies have their private separate region, where they are played with, taught basic training and, in the same way as a new child, are "potty trained" (housebroken). Enough personal attention is presented with, with time allotted for play and naps.

Some other trend that is presently sweeping the nation is pet spas. These generally cater only to smaller animals. Here animals are groomed, exercised and pampered in a similar manner as humans visiting a spa; their ears, teeth, nails and hair will be tended to, and they will be walked, played with, massaged (if the facility has the appropriately trained staff) and cared for. These services, again, can be found for most small animals, such as dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets and guinea pigs, and appear to be purchased on a daily basis or for prolonged periods of time (overnight stays are obtainable in spas with boarding facilities). A variation on this style is proposed in diy pet spas, where owners are encouraged to groom their pet by themselves, furthering the bond between pet and human. The spa will supply the suitable space, as well as a wash basin, shampoo, nail clippers and other grooming equipment. Pet spas can be a wonderful treat for all animals.

Thinking about a new pet is exciting but there are a lot of things to keep in mind, especially if this is your first one.

Allergies are a key concern for you and your family when deciding on your new pet. If someone in your household is allergic to an animal, trying to keep one of that type as a pet can create problems, especially if the symptoms cannot be controlled by medication. However, don't let allergies automatically stop you from pursuing a pet. The person affected will likely not be allergic to all animals. Also, contemplate a less traditional type of pet such as a lizard or rat.

Initial investment budgets are another piece to think about. The price of the animal is the first thing that comes to mind. A rodent or reptile will be far less costly than a dog. Second to consider is the equipment such as a cage or kennels, leash and collar. Third, and sometimes forgotten, is whether veterinary care will be necessary. A puppy or kitten will need several visits for immunizations in their first year, but a rodent will likely never need vet service.

Continuing costs will also need reflection. Ask yourself how much you can afford to spend on a monthly basis to feed and care for an animal. A large animal will obviously be much more expensive to feed than a tank of fish. Also, small critters, like hamsters or parakeets do not require veterinary check-ups or shots, so there will be little or no future expenses for those types of animals.

The current pet supplies market is enormous. Do not feel overwhelmed by all of the choices. When you first get your new family pet, buy only the items you initially need. For instance, if you're getting a cat, a month's supply of food, one or two toys, a collar and a litter box is enough to get started. You can later purchase extra toys, a scratching post, or other accessories. That way your initial purchasing budget will be more manageable.

Take into account how much space you need for the pet you are considering. An animal that lives in a tank or cage will be terrific in any size home. If you live in a an apartment, this type of pet may be the best choice for your family. Perhaps you have a large yard. In that case, you could accommodate even the largest dog. In this situation, the amount of room you have does not need to be a key factor in your decision process.

Before you finally decide on a pet, think about how much love and friendship you want to give and receive from your animal. If you are hoping to find a companion, dogs, cats and even birds make an excellent choice. These types of animals will form a bond of camaraderie with you and your family. However, if you are away from home frequently or do not have the desire for connection with your pet, a better choice may be a hamster, guinea pig or other small creature. These types of animals do not need relationships to be happy.

You are making an exciting decision, so think carefully and keep these things in mind as you proceed.

Everybody loves puppies. In Toronto puppies are the a popular 1st pet for couples, families and singles. Living in the city can be tough on a dog so as an owner. Make sure you visit Toronto pet stores or a pet supplies store in Totonto to help care for your pet.

Our pets are our friends. We live, play and travel with our pets. But we do something more: we care them. We feed them, bath them, provide a custom environment and take them to the vet when they get ill or hurt.

Having a pet will cost you money if you want to have a happy and healthy pet. Many pet owners do not know that they can lower their expenses by having their pets insured. Pet insurance is also referred to as pet health insurance, pet care insurance or veterinary pet insurance (VPI).

The main reason why pet owners choose to insure their pets is to lower their vet bills, and to have healthy pets the same time. Pet insurance policies will pay a significant amount of the cost of your vet bills. Think your dog or cat get ill a few times during a year, contracts a disease, or gets hurt and you need to pay a few hundred dollars almost every year. If you have your pet insured, you will pay just a small amount of the sum. The rest will be paid by the insurance company.

A good reason why you should insure your pet is that it is not expensive. Compared to your vet bills you will see that it is very cheap and it worth having health insurance for your pet.

It is better to insure your pet when he is young than to wait to get older. If it happens to get hurt or something else, it is for your own good to have him insured already. Note that old pets are slightly accepted to be insured buy most insurance companies, so you better insure your pet as soon as you can.

You probably ask: But my pet is a guinea pig. Can I buy guinea pig insurance? The answer is yes. Pet insurance is available to almost any type of pets: from cats and dogs, to guinea pigs, hamsters, chinchillas, lizards, birds, rabbits and more. It is true that not all companies provide insurance for other pets but only cats and dogs, but there are big and reputable pet insurance companies that will accept it.

When you look to buy insurance for your pet, you must first think if the company is a reputable one and provide you with all the information about the policy you wish to buy. If you do not know where to find a good insurance provider, ask your veterinarian, or you can search the internet for some reviews on insurance companies. Do not hesitate to find someone who already bought insurance and ask his advice.

You can buy insurance for your pet from various companies and you also can find them online. You can find free insurance quotes online very easy. Just search the internet for pet insurance quotes and voila, here they are. Choosing to buy pet insurance online can bring you the cheapest and best insurance policy available for your pet.

The reason? When those care products and supplies become costly, it is all too easy to slip into the cost-saving mode which could mean not purchasing necessary items for optimal pet health. The economy has hit many people hard and pet expenses are often the most expendable when it comes to budgeting your money. However, with an affordable outlet in which to purchase pet care items, you can keep your pet happy and healthy.

Preventative Medications

With the right preventative medications, you can keep your pets from getting sick and producing high veterinarian bills. While you must take your pet into the vet for check-ups, you don't have to purchase prescription medications from them such as flea and heartworm preventatives. An online pet store with a good reputation can often sell you the medications you need at a fraction of the vet's retail cost.

Insurance for your Pet

Smaller animals like guinea pigs, rats and hamsters are inexpensive to purchase and maintain; pets like cats and dogs though are more of an investment. Therefore, if you want to protect yourself against the possibility of the high cost of veterinary procedures in your pet's future, you can purchase pet insurance. An experienced, knowledgeable online pet store that offers pet supplies will also likely have options for insurance as well.

Pet Accessories and Toys

Part of responsible pet ownership is providing toys for entertainment and stimulation as well as other accessories to help in the care of your animals. If you want a sociable animal that behaves, you will have to invest in a crate or kennel in addition to other paraphernalia that will help reinforce positive behaviours. Grooming basics are important so having a resource to purchase essential grooming supplies so you can do the job yourself and save some money is important too. Fencing, kibble, treats, leashes and even sturdy food and water bowls are part of the pet package.

Being a responsible pet owner means taking care of all your pet's needs from food and shelter to discipline, training and vet care. Finding one source to provide pet supplies for all your pet's needs makes sense, particularly if that resource is an online store.
