The courses organized by a dog grooming school are the straight-forward chance of getting a job in this activity. In-person practicals are probably the most important part of the training process.

Working on a live pet, learning about the various needs of the animals that are met by grooming represent essential stages for the creation of skills. A dog grooming school organize other types of classes as well such as placement assistance or vet technician training.

Home study programs make another option to a classic dog grooming school. Normally, programs are structured in six or eight-week curricula. The institution or dog grooming school should have accreditation, which you can check with the Better Business Bureau in your state. There are community colleges, trade schools and universities that take into consideration the professional training completed in a dog grooming school or the certification obtained in a home study program. If you have such options available and you take interest in such a career, then, it's worth giving it a try.

Between distance learning and direct training, the latter is definitely more adequate for one's needs, thanks to the practical side of teaching. If you don't find satisfactory information on the Internet, you can ask the local groomers about the school that they attended. Attending the courses of a local institution has a lot of advantages because you have the chance to develop skills by working directly on animals. Then, there comes the issue of tools, because Internet courses and home programs do not supply the necessary equipment.

Tools are available with the dog grooming school supplies and you will not have to invest at this stage; you can wait until later when you have the money or you want to open your own business. After you graduate the program of a dog grooming school you become an authorized groomer, and you can apply for jobs in this field of activity or start your own business. Last but not least, if there are several schools to choose from, it is important to compare their programs as well as the costs of your education.

For complete grooming needs, you need to periodically offer a helping hand. Providing this assistance as many benefits to it. One very important benefit it adds to the bonding between you and your dog. From an important health benefit, you can help catch any disease or other health problems that can affect your pet.

Dogs use a number of methods to stay clean including licking, shaking and scratching. Routine brushing them can help the fur to stay clean and unmated. Some breeds have longer hair and require this attention daily. Breeds with shorter hair can be brushed more like once a week. Generally, dogs will enjoy the brushing and may even sit still while you are brushing. If your dog does not care for this treatment, use the brush in a short period of time while talking soothingly to him. Afterwards, give him a treat for being good. Add a little more time on the next brushing until they start to accept and even enjoy it.
Check for dark specs on the skin as these can be fleas. Run your hands down his coat as you brush him. The sight of black flecks, are flea dropping; you need to seek help for your animal right away. Also check for rice like debris near his tail or even in his faeces. This is a sure sign that the dog has worms. Again, you need to take your pet to the vet in this case as they will need treatment.

Your pet needs his teeth brushed daily. Use a child sized toothbrush or just a finger toothbrush that is designed for your pet. You will need to use a paste designed for dogs only. Do not use your toothpaste as this can seriously make your dog ill. Give them rawhide chews to gnaw on as another aid to help keep dog's teeth in tip top shape. This helps keep teeth as well as gums healthy.

Other types of grooming are required as well, but not as frequently. Check ears and nails weekly or monthly. Check into your dog's ears. The sight of small, black/brown specks could be ear mites. Taking your dog on walks on sidewalks as well as in the driveway can help to wear nails down. It is important that the nails do not get too long. Again, check with your vet as to the proper way to trim them to help the dog to stay healthy and to walk correctly. It is definitely not a good idea to trim them without getting some training from your vet first.

There are some simple trimming tips which are easy to follow and only take 15-20 minutes a month at most. Generally, springers are easy to trim and keep tidy, unlike some other breeds. If you are to do the best job, then you will require some basic dog grooming tools: A straight scissors, a thinning scissors and a wide tooth comb - these are easily obtained from your local pet store.

A brief word here on hygiene - disinfect the scissors before and after use.

Some springer owners like to use clippers, though they are not really necessary on this versatile breed. Don't give your dog too short a haircut as they are a working breed and the coat is to keep them warm. * Groom the head first, by pulling out dead or loose hair with your fingers. Avoid scissors on the head.

* If you have them, thinning scissors can be used at the top of the ears, with a large tooth comb to help. Usually, the hair is thinned from to top of the ear down about a third of the way. With straight scissors, then you have to do a bit of layering.

* For pups, comb the lower part of the ear only; adult dogs may need some thinning. A slight trim round the lower ear flap may also be needed, taking care not to nick him.

* The inside of the ear flap is a delicate area - trim it carefully so that the ear lies flat against the head. This keeps his hearing clear. The hair around the ear canal should be trimmed to about ½" (1 cm). If you are nervous with the scissors near his ear canal, then a pair of small baby scissors might help.

* At the top of the neck, comb through the coat. Remove any dead hair with your finger and thumb, just as you did for the head.

* Beneath the chin, use the trimming scissors as far down as the breastbone, keeping the scissors pointing down. You will be cutting a strip blending in at the edges of the shoulders.

* The feathering below the breastbone, and down between the front legs, may be trimmed if it is becoming unruly.

* The sides and the top of the back are never cut or trimmed, just remove dead hair with your fingers. If your dog has a wavy coat in this area, then you will have to trim and thin as best you can.

* The feathering on the quarters, front legs and tummy, may require some shaping and thinning on older dogs.

* Paws should be trimmed to outline with straight scissors, and also trim the underside flat to the pads, and no more.

* The final job is the rear so that you don't have to clean your scissors during the trim. Trim the tail first working from the end inwards, and preserving the shape.

* Tidy up under the tail against his rump, to keep the area clean and clear. Trim under the tail close to the body, to help with cleanliness. You may wish to trim a bit more extensively in this area with a bitch.

That's it, all done. Give him a good brushing and maybe even a swim - he will have enjoyed the attention and feel freshened up. Disinfect your tools ready for the next time.

These are the main points about trimming - for showing your dog there will be a couple of other points to tidy up.

It is different for all dogs, and so you need to know what type of dog you have and their type of coat, what is their fur type?

There is some equipment that all dogs need, shampoo, and shampoo brush. Shears or clippers, and brushes. You can get different types for short hair or long, double coated or wire haired coat. You need to have a feel for what you wish to take on, is it just a trim to save money between visits to a professional groomer, or are you taking on the total grooming of your dog. There are three steps to grooming your dog and these are called; Pre bathing, bathing and post bathing. The pre bathing is where you clean ears, trim nails, de-tangle, brush and comb the coat ready for the bath. Do as much as you can here as this is where your end result will pay. The better you can pre bath really shows in the end. When you have de-tangled your dog and all the knots are out of their coat, you can shape the face and feet for the look you want, think about what type of shape you dog's face is and work Within their natural shape for the best look. Use clippers or thinning scissors on the body coat. Do not take too much off at this point but get the shape and the rough length that you want. You are now ready for the next part. Some owners just want a good short cut for the hot summer months.

The bath, this is where you get the dog wet. Make sure you and the dog are safe, so think about a bath mat and the weight of your dog if you need to lift them in and out of a bath. Once your dog is in the bath, start with wetting the coat fully with warm water. Try to avoid the ear area as this can give your dog problems later. Pay special attention to dirty areas like under the dog or the legs. Using the shampoo lather up your dog and give them a really good cleaning. Be careful of the eyes and ears here. Rinse well with warm water and repeat if you need to. Like with you, the dog's hair will squeak if it had been rinsed totally. Gently squeeze off any excess of water. Lift the dog out of the bath and towel dry. A great tip here is to have everything ready and to hand before you start, as you may find you are very busy with a dog and water.

Post bath is where you do all the fun bits to the dog. Dry the dog's coat with a hair drier, or if it is warm you can allow the hair to dry naturally. Brush the coat though, which will be much easier this time. When the coat is dry re-clip the fur if needed. Tidy up your dogs face and feet for that special look. Your dog will be looking so much better at this point and your hard work will show. Add a drop of dog cologne if you wish and your dog is ready for that special occasion.

In this article you will learn about the basic health responsibilities you should attend to and how you can go about doing so.

Your puppy’s diet is first on our list. Puppies are on their mother’s milk until they are about six to eight weeks old. This weaning age is usually when breeders allow the puppies to be taken home by their new owner. Ask your breeder what the pup is currently eating and continue to feed him that. Usually they will be eating a soft canned food mixed with puppy milk replacer. Use less and less milk until your puppy is on pure canned food. You can do the same when switching to dry food by mixing in a little soft food and then cutting back a little each day until the puppy is on dry food only. Dry food is recommended as the best type of food for dogs as it has less fat content and keeps your dog’s teeth strong and free of plaque build up. This should happen gradually over the course of about 7 – 10 days. You should never feed your dog human food (i.e.: table scraps) at any time during his life. A dog’s diet requires a specific balance of certain nutrients and feeding your dog table scraps will upset this balance. Also remember to keep a water bowl filled for your pup at all times.

Your next concern should be to see that your dog gets all of the required vaccinations. Some breeders may start the vaccination process, so check with your dog’s breeder to find out if any vaccinations have been given to your pup. There are three shots given three weeks apart. These shots are referred to as the “core” injections. They help to prevent your pup from contracting distemper, parvovirus, and hepatitis. You can have the first shot administered when your puppy is 6 weeks old. Your veterinarian may suggest vaccinations to prevent illnesses that are a concern for certain breeds or demographic regions. These are called non-core vaccinations as they are not a requirement for all dogs. To be on the safe side, we recommend you keep your dog away from other dogs (that are not in your home) until your puppy has completed his round of core vaccines. They will become effective about 10 days after the last vaccination.

Grooming is another important aspect of owning a puppy. Some dogs have stricter grooming requirements than others, particularly ones with long or curly fur. Certain breeds of dog are particularly susceptible to ear infections and require that their ears be cleaned frequently. All dogs should have their nails clipped periodically (usually when you hear their paws click on the floor you know it’s time for a trim!). It’s very important that this is done in the correct fashion using proper canine nail clippers, as cutting to deeply in your dog’s claws can result in severe pain and bleeding.

Exercise is one of the most vital aspects of your dog’s health. Your puppy will have a great deal of energy, which is completely natural! You should encourage playtime, especially outdoors so that he can have tons of room to romp around. If your puppy becomes restless, he may chew excessively which can be dangerous for your puppy (think of all the cords/cables plugging into your outlets, as well as wooden furniture that can splinter!). Pet steps are a great tool you can use to give your dog a workout. The time you spend training him to use the dog stairs to get onto furniture will encourage your pup to bond with you as well as to be obedient and respectful.
