Our family pets enjoy being with us, and RVing enables your family to be complete - without the anxiety associated with boarding your pets or asking a friend or neighbor to take care of animals while you're away.

Not all pets enjoy trips in a vehicle, but if you've taken your dog in the car to the dog park, to the vet, or on errands you already know what kind of a traveler you're dealing with. Cats are very different, as you probably know, and most are not happy travelers unless they've been trained to travel as young kittens.

When you bring your pet along with you, remember that it's never a good idea to leave your companion alone in a hot and unventilated RV for hours on end. You'll also not want to leave your pet with access to the entire RV. Just include an area that is spacious enough for your pet to enjoy with you, but away from the RV's driver. Nothing could be more catastrophic than having your affectionate critter finding his or her way under the accelerator or the brake while driving.

If your pet gets car sick, he or she is probably not the best candidate for an RV vacation and might actually be more comfortable staying at home. Many caged animals - guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, rabbits - are fairly easy to bring along because you can secure them and keep them happy with their toys. The exception to this is birds, as they can catch a draft fairly easily, so check with your bird veterinarian before you venture out with your feathered friend.

Before you make your final decision on bringing your pets, ask yourself a few questions: Will my pet remain safe during the trip? Will my pet be subjected to drafts, low or high temperatures. Is my pet in good health? Is my pet well-behaved? Will my pet enjoy being around other people and pets we might encounter during our travels? Is my pet a good traveler in general?

If you are pleased with your answers to those questions, then your pet will probably be a very good RV travel companion. Call your vet, grab your RV, and hit the road with your entire family!

Sometimes, taking the family dog along just can't be helped, like in the case of a long distance move. While it is true that dogs are resilient, they need a few things for long car rides and trips, just like people do.

Perhaps the most important thing to pack for the dog is water and a bowl to put it in. Just about any bowl will do, though collapsible dog bowls are available and are easy to store when space is at a premium. Every time the car stops, offer the dog some water. Allow him to drink his fill. After a walk, offer water again before loading back into the car. A leash is also vital for walking the dog at every stop. A dog that is obedient off the leash at home is still likely to become nervous when travelling. Many public rest areas offer dog walk areas that face busy interstates. This can be terrifying to a dog, so it is important to leash the dog before taking it out of the car every time. This will stop the dog from running away, even if it becomes frightened.

Dog food is also important and should be offered along with water during stops. Many dogs may not feel like eating during a trip. Do not worry, as it is a natural dog response. Keep some treats on hand to offer occasionally to get the dog through the drive. Chances are good that she'll want to eat once the trip is over and the family is settled somewhere for the night.

Take the dog's favourite bed or pillow and toys along on the trip. The pillow will come in handy in the car to give the dog a comfortable spot and help protect the car's upholstery. Bones and chew toys will help the dog stay occupied in the car. But also take along toys like balls and be sure to play with the dog once the destination is reached. This will help the dog stretch, and the humans too, and will also help her to feel more relaxed.

When travelling long distances with old dogs, small dogs, or puppies that are still housebreaking, take some potty pads along. If the vehicle is large and the dog has room to move around in the floor, puppy training pads can help avoid accidents- especially with young puppy training. Dogs will frequently be too nervous to pee or eliminate during rest stops and then end up having accidents inside the house later when they just can't hold it anymore. Putting down a few potty pads will help avoid messy accidents. This is especially important when staying in a hotel with pets.

Dogs love to travel with their humans. It is important to plan and pack carefully to ensure that the family dog will also have everything she needs to be taken care of comfortable both during long car rides and on the rest of the trip. Food, water, bedding, toys, and potty pads are easily packed and will help keep the dog healthy and happy to be on the road.

Here are some tips to keep your pet happy and safe on moving day.

- Maintain normal routine: Pack over a period of time and try to maintain your pet's normal routine. Advance planning will make your move less stressful.

- Keep your pet secure: Place your pet in a safe, quiet place, such as the bathroom or pet carrier on moving day so that he or she cannot escape. If you place your pet in a room, place a large sign on the door that says DO NOT ENTER. Containing your pet in a pet carrier on moving day will keep them safely confined as well. Gradually get them used to the carrier ahead of time by having your pet spend time in it prior to moving day.

- Purchase a new ID tag for your pet: Get a new pet ID tag that includes your new address and telephone number. An up-to-date ID tag is a lost pet's ticket home.

- Safe car travel: Be sure that your pet is safely restrained in the car. Utilizing a pet travel harness or travel carrier are the best ways to keep your pet safe. They not only protect your pet from injury, but they help by keeping them from distracting you with their usual enthusiasm as you drive. Keep their heads inside the windows, make frequent pit stops, and don't leave them alone. Pet barriers also work great!

- Talk to your pet's vet: Talk to your veterinarian about travelling with a pet who doesn't like to travel. They can recommend behaviour modification tactics or medication that might lessen the stress of travel. Depending on your new address, your pet may also need additional vaccinations, medications, and health certificates.

- Find pet friendly lodging in advance.

- Plan ahead for air travel: Check with your veterinarian and the airline if your pet will be flying. Familiarize yourself with the rules specific to the airline you are flying.

- Prepare your new home: Pets love familiar surroundings so be sure to take with you all the familiar and necessary things your pet will need from day one in your new home.

- Pet photo: Have a recent photo of your pet on hand if your pet becomes lost.

These tips can help ensure your pet is welcome, happy and safe in travelling to their new home.
